The Student Multimedia Studio , located on the first floor of University Library, has hardware and software for converting VHS and audio cassette tapes into digital formats. There are also flatbed scanners and document cameras that can be used for scanning oversized papers and objects.
NVivo has a mixture of qualitative and quantitative analysis features: in particular, it can compute inter-coder reliability and use cluster analysis to examine text or coding similarities. Search this Guide Search. Why use NVivo? Analyze and organize unstructured text, audio, video, or image data. Playback ability for audio and video files, so that interviews can easily be transcribed in NVivo.
Import notes and captures from Evernote - great for field research. Import citations from EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero, or other bibliographic management software - great for literature reviews. Figure 1 STEP 3 - Create a research journal and develop a coding strategy Review the summarized memos you wrote for the transcripts. Create a research journal as a memo and write up the key issues coming out from the interviews. See How to create a research journal for more information Reflect on how they relate to your research questions and develop an initial broad coding strategy.
Alternatively, you may be working in an emergent way. Or you may know some initial codes and will develop the rest in an emergent way.
Whichever way, you can start coding at a broad level. You can experiment with what you think will be your initial codes in the Mind Map and convert them into codes from there. Figure 5 Step 6 - Review your coding After you have finished coding for a broad topic area, review the coding by double-clicking and opening it. Get a quick feel for the kinds of things covered in that code by creating a Word Cloud. The Word Cloud can give you some quick ideas about how you could code the broad code more finely.
You can code in a code in the same way that you code in a transcript. Refer to About Automatic Coding Techniques for the details. At regular intervals, you can groom this list — checking whether related themes could be grouped together in a hierarchy.
NVivo lets you query and visualize your data in all sorts of ways — refer to Move forward with queries and visualizations to find out more. For example, you could create a matrix to see how men and women respond to a selection of themes:.
In the thick of data analysis, it can be easy to lose sight of your research question. Mind maps in NVivo are another great way to consolidate your thinking. For example, you could visualize your conceptual framework in a mind map and update it as your thinking evolves: You should also consider creating a project journal in NVivo.
Keeping an audit trail of your challenges, assumptions, decisions and epiphanies will come in very handy when your supervisor or client asks a difficult question. The journal tells the story of your project, makes your decisions transparent and helps you avoid that terrifying blank page when it comes to writing up. How about you?
