Despite all that bustle, the most noticeable element of the layout is a degree view of the surrounding Blues City. The highlight of The Lookout are two observation decks and, upon ascent, visitors are instantly drawn to the operable glass walls and views beyond. One observation deck is oriented towards downtown Memphis, while the other looks out over the Mississippi River in Memphis.
These balconies jut out over the edge of the Memphis Pyramid. The Memphis Pyramid observation decks are often open, and not just in an accessibility sense, but in a physical sense. Two NanaWall SL70 outward folding glass wall systems are in place to divide each observation deck from, or combine it with, the inside of The Lookout restaurant. When open, each of these 12 panel systems create a foot wide opening that provides unobstructed views of the river and city, and a clear way to walk out onto the observation decks.
The openings transform the entire dining experience. The views are undoubtedly breathtaking, but the fresh air breezing through the restaurant separates the location from all the other rooftop restaurants with city views.
When the wind is severe, The Lookout closes the NanaWall glass walls to keep diners comfortable. However, finding a glass wall that can operate well in an elevated environment is not easy. The builders also specified a low profile saddle sill for resistance against wind-driven rain to combat stormy weather. With a footprint larger than six football fields, The Pyramid's base covers , square feet. Seating capacity is approximately 21, for concerts and just over 20, for basketball.
Twenty-six lower level luxury suites are located on the plaza concourse. Two additional suites are designed for disabled patron. Disabled seating is also available on all three levels of The Pyramid. The Pyramid Gallery of Stars is an informal gathering area on the East Mezzanine, featuring super-size photos of the biggest stars in sports and entertainment.
All of the photos were taken from past Pyramid events. The Gallery area also features additional restrooms and concessions. The backstage areas include 10 dressing rooms, four locker rooms, a media work room, interview room, show production office and green room. The giant center hung scoreboard has the latest state-of-the-art LED video display board technology.
The entire system features full video production capabilities; four center-hung foot by foot replay boards and 24 concession stand monitors. A new poll taken for the Memphis Commercial Appeal shows just over half of local residents support the county's financing plan, but up to two-thirds have some concerns about individual elements.
The city and county already approved their funding packages. Some elements of state funding are awaiting approval. A large number of those polled are concerned that attendance won't live up to projections and a nearly equal number believe their taxes will increase to help fund the arena. Residents were polled about the plan in general and then again after explaining elements of the financing plan. Most of those polled liked the idea of using arena revenues to finance the building, but they also opposed the use of revenue bonds described as "less secure" than general obligation bonds.
Meanwhile, a group of citizens opposed to the plan have mailed 50, letters to Memphis-area residents hoping to fill a petition with names and force a referendum. The group has not revealed the source of its funding. The mailing included a return envelope with a live stamp.
The group says it's not opposed to the team, but to the funding plan. It needs 41, signatures by June 15 to force a city election and 58, to force a county vote. A judge also allowed a lawsuit challenging the financing plan to move forward. The suit claims the financing plan constitutes an illegal public loan to a private firm. The decision allows the suit to move forward with the filing of position papers.
Unconvinced, Morris thanked Dance for his input and asked him to keep thinking. The Pyramid as seen from the Mississippi River, upstream of downtown Memphis. Catfishing is a sport akin to freshwater big game hunting. Those who fall under the spell of these whiskered giants soon revere them, worshipping catfish in the way coastal anglers might worship tuna or marlin. Like prized saltwater species, special hooks are often employed to ensure that catfish are humanely caught and released in good health.
Trophy fish are often prized for their photo opportunities and then released. Morris was stone cold serious about it. If the Pyramid was ever going to become a Bass Pro Shops, someone on that boat would have to catch a photo-worthy catfish. I was torn about it. On day one of their trip, the crew headed downstream and struck out. As the second day dawned, Patterson plotted their course upstream, where the Pyramid might appear as a silver glimmer on the horizon in just the right light.
Or are we out? I can just see the smoke coming out of his ears Emmitt, who'd been nearly half asleep in the back of the boat, loaded up on a big fish.
Hagle relayed the message to then-mayor Herenton, and six and a half years later the kickoff party was held. Today, the Pyramid is once again a thriving tourist destination. In its first year of operation, , the building drew in more than 3 million visitors—six times that of nearby Graceland.
Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid is a success story from a business and civic point of view. Without that bite, he would have called the whole thing off. I am not making one bit of that up.
A free standing elevator brings restaurant patrons to the top of the Pyramid. It sits approximately Now, almost 30 years after the initial plans were laid for the Pyramid, some of its initial forgotten promises have come true.
As recently as this week, Mark and Donnie Wahlberg announced the addition of a brand new, tourist-centric Wahlburgers inside of the store.
As for Hardaway, the man who opened the building beneath a national spotlight in ? I have been back inside many, many times now. We take recruits up there, right to the top. Perhaps, the next time you visit Memphis, you will, too. This is a BETA experience. You may opt-out by clicking here.
